Lake Tekapo in Bloom

For a few fleeting weeks each summer, Lake Tekapo transforms into a dreamscape. Fields of pink, purple, and soft pastels bloom along the turquoise lake, framed by the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps. These are the famous Russell lupins, wildflowers that colour the high country from mid-November to late December, and sometimes linger into the new year if the weather is kind.

Standing among them feels almost unreal. The air is filled with colour, the lake shimmers brighter than ever, and for couples, it becomes one of the most romantic places in the world to say “I do.” A lupin wedding isn’t just about flowers, it’s about being part of a moment that exists only once each year.

Every stage of the bloom feels different. Early in the season the flowers are fresh and vibrant, full of energy and promise. At their peak, the shoreline looks carpeted in blossoms, the colours singing in every direction. And later, when the season softens, the crowds fade and there is a quiet beauty that feels just as magical.

That’s why no two lupin weddings are ever the same. Each year the bloom is a little different, each week has its own character. And maybe that’s part of their magic: these weddings are rare, precious, and unrepeatable.

After nearly 30 years of planning elopements, lupin weddings still stop me in my tracks. They remind me that the most beautiful weddings aren’t the ones we create, they’re the ones nature writes herself.

If your heart is pulling you toward this fleeting fairytale, I’d love to guide you there. Read more about our Lake Tekapo Lupin Wedding Package.
